Formula DRIFT Announces 2018 Championship Calendar
Long Beach, Calif. – December 5, 2017 – Formula DRIFT Black Magic Pro Championship has announced the official 2018 calendar for the Pro Championship and Pro2 Championship. The 15th Anniversary season will feature eight rounds of competition within the continental United States.
Notable changes include the addition of Gateway Motorsports Park, located just outside St. Louis, MO to fill a gap in the Midwest. Las Vegas will replace the iconic Irwindale Speedway for the season finale due to Irwindale’s closure this coming January.
“Returning to the Midwest has been a goal for us since our last event in Chicago back in 2006,” said Jim Liaw, President and Co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “Since then fans in the Midwest have been calling for a championship round and today we are happy to announce our return to the region. With the closure of such an iconic track as Irwindale Speedway, it was fitting to replace the venue with a location that provides glitz and glamour for a season finale that only Las Vegas can as a tourist destination. We expect a huge influx of fans traveling into Vegas for this round.”
Formula DRIFT Black Magic Pro Championship will begin in April at Round 1: Streets of Long Beach for the 2018 season. The 2018 Formula DRIFT Pro Championship Schedule is below:

EVENT COVERAGE BY Paddy McGrath
The final instalment of the Deane X Więcek story, and how one Irishman conquered the United States. Exclusively on @Speedhunters
“Out of 32 battles, he won 29 of them, a 90.6 percent win rate. He equalled the all-time record for most wins in a single season in his first season. He featured on the podium six times out of eight, and won the championship with the largest points haul in the last 10 years (651), as well as by the largest margin (113). All of which was achieved in a season that was never intended as anything more than a learning experience.”

Deane takes Formula Drift Championship, Więcek wins in Irwindale
Amazing end to Worthouse Drift Team’s rookie season in the Formula DRIFT Championship. As James Deane lifted the 2017 title in Irwindale on Saturday night his teammate Piotr Więcek won the final event.
Więcek and Deane were on fire throughout the whole weekend, taking second and third in the qualifying on Friday before Saturday’s Top 32 solo Bye Run officially gave the Irishman the Formula Drift title on the day of his 26th birthday.

Unfortunately, due to damage to his car after contact from Odi Bakchis in their Great 8 clash, the Irishman was eventually unable to go out for the Top 4 battle with his teammate. However a third position in Friday’s qualifying meant he was able to step on the third step of the final podium.

Więcek went on to battle with Dai Yoshihara in the final, coming out on top after a close chase run and taking his first victory to wrap up his rookie Formula Drift campaign in style. The win also elevated the Pole from 12th to 8th in the overall standings.

James Deane to battle for Formula DRIFT title in Irwindale
Worthouse Drift Team’s James Deane heads to the eighth and final round of the Formula DRIFT Championship in Irwindale, California aiming to clinch that dream-come-true title this weekend.
Leading the standings by 96 points with just 107 up for grabs at the famous House of Drift, Deane can technically secure the Championship already with a good qualifying on Friday but the Irishman, a four-time winner this year, is focusing on giving his best during the big finale rather than doing the math. Irwindale Speedway is one of the few venues at which the 25-year-old competed in Formula DRIFT back in 2010 but James doesn’t expect it to give him any edge over his opponents.
His Worthouse Drift Team’s teammate, Poland’s Piotr Więcek will be heading to Irwindale to wrap up a successful rookie season and hopes a trouble and error free weekend brings him back inside the Top 10 in the overall standings.
The final round of the Formula DRIFT Championship starts this Friday with a qualifying session at 5:15PM local time. Saturday’s main competition starts with Top 32 finals at 3:40PM local time followed by Top 16 at 7PM with all action streamed live on www.formulad.com/live.

James Deane took his fourth victory of the season and second on the bounce to move a step closer to the sensational Formula DRIFT Championship title after Saturday’s main event at the Texas Motor Speedway. His Worthouse Drift Team’s teammate, Polish rookie Piotr Więcek, took a solid 11th in the main event after a season’s best qualifying the day before.
Deane earned a Bye Run straight to the Top 16 after winning the qualifying session for a third consecutive time with a 97-point score on his second run. The Irishman then battled with Alec Hohnadell, Chelsea DeNofa and Fredric Aasbo before topping Chris Forsberg in a spectacular final. The multiple European Champion leads the standings by a massive 96 points with just 107 up for grabs during the big final in Irwindale.
His teammate Piotr Więcek started the weekend in Texas by taking his season’s best qualifying result with a sixth position and a 92-point score before beating Dan Burkett in Top 32. The very close Top 16 battle with Dai Yoshihara eventually saw the Japanese, a former Formula DRIFT Champion, progressing to the Great 8. Więcek however managed to seal a top rookie spot in the overall standings and reduced his points gap to the Top 10.
The last round of the Formula DRIFT Championship will take place in Irwindale, California, on the 13-14th of October, but before that Deane and Więcek will compete in the last round of the Irish Championship to be held in a fortnight.

Deane and Więcek looking for a strong weekend in Texas
The Worthouse Drift Team’s duo is set to take part in the penultimate round of the Formula DRIFT Championship in Texas this weekend with James Deane defending a 57 point lead in the series and Piotr Więcek holding the top rookie spot.
The Irishman leads the way having taken four podiums from five events, including three victories. With just two rounds to go, a solid result this weekend would bring James a step closer to a sensational title in his first full season in Formula DRIFT.
His teammate, Poland’s Piotr Więcek is eleventh overall and a top rookie, coming back to the US after a season’s best result of fifth last time out in Seattle and also looking for another strong showing.
Round 7 of the Formula DRIFT Championship, the Showdown, will take place at infield of the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, just outside Dallas with the impressive NASCAR venue able to hold a crowd of just over 180 thousand fans.
Qualifying and main event will both be streamed live on www.FormulaD.com/live with the former on Friday from 12:45 AM to 3:15 PM and the latter on Saturday from 3:15 PM (Top 32) and 7:30 PM (Top 16).

SpeedHunters: Deane x Więcek: One Step Closer by Paddy McGrath 08/12/2017
The speed at which the 2017 Formula Drift season is passing, is frightening. It feels like only a couple of weeks ago that James Deane and Piotr Więcek shared their plan to compete a full FD campaign in 2017, but in reality, it was 10 months back. By the time the Irwindale final comes around in October, it will have been over a year since the decision was made.

The Worthouse Drift Team’s duo put in an amazing show before Deane went on to battle Dai Yoshihara in Top 4 and Fredric Aasbo in the final, coming out on top twice in fierce battles which both included On More Time runs.
Deane’s victory in Monroe is his third of the season after Long Beach and Atlanta, extending his Championship lead over Aasbo to 57 points with just two rounds to go. Next up in Texas Motor Speedway on the 8-9 of September.
